Scott Wiley wouldn’t change a thing about his career. Having just celebrated his 20th anniversary with Allegis Group, Scott currently relishes his job as the head of retail recruiting operations for our company MarketSource, which creates sales and marketing solutions that can strengthen brands, optimize market and channel coverage, increase speed-to-market and productivity, and ultimately drive ROI for their clients. The role not only affords him the ability to impact those around him at work but also those in the community. Scott recently led an office service project to fill four minivans with new toys and clothing, as well as donate $1,500 in gift cards for groceries and essential goods to benefit homeless families in Atlanta, Georgia.
It’s through projects like this and the fulfillment he gets from watching colleagues grow in their careers that make Scott a fulfilled member of the Allegis Group team. We recently sat down to discover more about how Scott’s passion for sports, family, music, developing leaders, and forming lasting relationships have enabled him to do — and to be — better every day. Here’s how the conversation went.
Q: Why did you join Allegis Group?
Scott: It was 1998. I was 22 years old and a recent graduate from the University of Georgia. Go Dawgs! At that time, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my career, but I landed a phone interview with Director of Business Operations John McGee with the Atlanta Maxim Group office, and we connected. [Maxim merged into the Allegis Group network of companies in 2001.] After the interview, I was excited to learn more. I went for a visit and met so many incredible people. I knew I wanted to be a part of the company’s recruiting business because of the culture and the energy the company displayed from the very beginning. Many of the people I met on that half-day are still some of my best friends and mentors. I ended up spending 11 years as a recruiter with what is now TEKsystems, and I loved every minute of it. In 2009, I took an opportunity to join MarketSource as director of talent acquisition and was promoted into my current role in 2015. I’m responsible for the day-to-day management of our Retail Recruiting Team including hiring, personnel development, strategic alignment, and operational excellence.
Q: What influences your happiness at work and your continued career success?
Scott: I think what plays the most significant role in my happiness at work is that I have realized what my passion is. I love developing people, more specifically I love developing leaders. Identifying this passion has allowed me to align myself with roles where I can do this. I’ve always respected leaders in our company who have “family trees.” Someone who does this well is previous TEKsystems President Keith Bozeman. The leaders he groomed are still making a great impact on Allegis Group. MarketSource President Rick Haviland is another one of these leaders who has created a legacy both here at MarketSource and at Allegis Global Solutions, where he spent nearly 20 years, culminating in serving as its president before he took over at MarketSource in 2009. I am always striving to replicate their nurturing, serve-down environment here on our team.
Q: In what ways have you provided opportunity to others or in what ways has opportunity been provided to you?
Scott: The recruiter role at MarketSource is an entry-level position, much like other Allegis Group recruiting and staffing companies. So it is incredibly important for us to show a career path and provide growth for top performers. I am incredibly proud that we have promoted over 20 MarketSource employees so far this year into different roles within the company and across Allegis Group. This includes promotions across our back office and into Aerotek and TEKsystems. I am particularly proud of the recent promotion of GinaRose Galli to director of business development. She has worked incredibly hard and created a legacy on our team that will be quite difficult to replace, but this is a fantastic opportunity for her, and I know she’ll succeed immensely.
Q: What does working for Allegis Group mean to you?
Scott: No matter what company you work for, you’ll find a shared set of core values connect us. For me, our ability to build deep relationships is one of the most meaningful. In my opinion, if everything else goes wrong, the ability to lean on others, work as a team, and overcome a problem is essential to what Allegis Group is about.
Q: If you could offer advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Scott: I would say you don’t know everything, and everything isn’t black and white. In many ways, what I have realized over the years is that almost all of life and being a leader happens in the gray. Another useful piece of advice is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Q: How do you spend your free time?
Scott: I have an awesome wife, Suzie, and two great girls. Izzy is 13, and May is 11. Our family loves live music, and we try to get to as many concerts as we can. We recently took our girls out to Red Rocks in Colorado to see one of our favorite bands, Turnpike Troubadours. We have also been to a couple of music festivals this year with them as well and loved every second. If you’re looking for new music, my current playlist is pretty eclectic but includes The Shins, Otis Redding, The Avett Brothers, Sturgill Simpson, Aretha Franklin, Jay-Z, The Smiths, Ryan Adams, Foo Fighters, The Grateful Dead/Phil Lesh and friends, Allman Brothers Band, Houndmouth, Outkast, Jack White, and The Pixies.
I also run, play tennis, and enjoy watching all sports but specifically University of Georgia football. Izzy’s middle name is Georgia in honor of the University of Georgia Dawgs!
Q: What skill would you like to learn and why?
Scott: Patience is something I need to continue to work on. Although I am much better than I was 10 or 15 years ago, I sometimes rush head first into something instead of considering all options. On a personal note, I am a fairly good tennis player, but my backhand is terrible. So another skill I would love to learn is how to develop a better backhand.
